Orange County Friends Meeting
Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)
Our formal name is The Religious Society of Friends, and we are sometimes called Friends. Since at least 1650 we have also been called (and have used the name) Quakers.
The word Friends may have been derived from a Bible verse (John 15:14): Ye are my friends if ye do whatsoever I command you.
As recounted in George Fox's Journal, the term Quaker was a derisive term used by " ... Justice Bennet, of Derby, who was the first that called us Quakers, because I bade them tremble at the word of the Lord."
Either Friends or Quakers will do: they mean the same.
